Fibre in CCTV Systems

Fibre optics holds major advantages for the security industry.  The low bandwidth rate of the video signal means that the camera can be as far as 2-3km away from the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) rack and still the signal will be strong.

The advantages of using fibre optics include:

• Immunity to EMI
• Versatility of cable, enabling the one cable to travel through several different environments
• Immunity to lightning and corrosion
• Clear digital signal.

The usual design involves the video signal being converted to an optical signal and being decoded at the monitoring station.

For multiple camera systems, the decoding is done through a multiplexer.  In systems that utilize Pan, Tilt & Zoom (PTZ) cameras, each camera is fed via two fibres, one fibre carries the outward control sigal and the other fibre carries the inbound video signal.
